No Updates

I have recently been asked if I have given up on this blog....in short yes. But I am still writing a little. You can check out my work (or lack there of) at www.houstonist.com. Hope you enjoy it.

There may be hope for this blog in the future...

This post goes out Eric (he writes one hell of a daily blog), who inquired about the sites status.

8/9/06 Listening

I am trying to catch up with the blog, kind of a painful process, but enjoyable nonetheless. I will be posting some old entries that I was working on, but never finished so keep checking back. It is weird to think that I am telling you to check back in the future to read about a something that happened in the (somewhat distant) past, talk about a phase lag.

I was thinking about what to post to keep this blog going...I didn't come up with anything too creative, but I am going to post what I have been listening to for the past few weeks and what I want to be listening to in the near future. So here it is...

Built to Spill - Your in Reverse

Thanks for Tim to turning me on to this CD. This is my first exposure to Built to Spill and this CD is amazing. This is one of those CD's where you can put it on from start to finish (or random) and listen to everything without skipping forward. Only hearing this one record makes me very excited to see them in mid-October.

Thom Yorke - The Eraser

I am a huge Radiohead fan, in fact I would say bigger than huge. Anyways, when I heard that Thom Yorke (frontman of Radiohead) was putting out an album, I knew I would like the record (especially considering Radiohead hasn't put out any new albums since 2003). The record is filled with a lot of 'techno beats' (for lack of better terminology) with Thom singing over them. It most noticeable feels like 'Kid A', but yet stays away from sounding like 'another' Radiohead album.

How to ruin a weekend 101

FIrst let me say, that I am sorry for not keeping up with this blog. I have about a half a dozen posts that are half written, just need the time to finish...they will be posted.

The past weekend had a lot of potential to be great, family was in town, Jess was getting Bridal portraits taken, good times to be had for sure. Unfortunately, all enjoyable moments for us were ruined thanks to some inconsiderate people. First, Jess' car was hit in a parking lot while she was getting her hair done on Friday. No note was left, just a smashed passenger door. If that wasn't bad enough, on Saturday we had parked Jess' car across the street in front of our neighbors house so that we could shuffle cars in the driveway and our lovely neighbor decided to mow his yard at that same time. He proceeded to scratch & dent the entire side (opposite side of the previous parking incident of course) of her car. We confronted him about the incident and he denies everything. I am normally relaxed about most things, but in this incident I have lost my faith in the goodness of the general public.

Other than the mishaps, the weekend was nice. We ate at Cava Bistro (review coming soon) with Jess' mom and my family. We also did a lot of wedding stuff (less than 3 months to the big day).

More posts to follow as I get time.

Update: 8/7/06
After recreating the 'scene' and reviewing the damage the neighbor finally took responsiblity. Things seem to be in order with the universe now.

Review: Shade

shadelogo_over.gif

Last Friday Jess, Kevin, Tracy and I went to Shade restaurant in the heights. I have driven and walked passed Shade many times and I have been wanting to try Shade for a while, but for whatever reason never made it there. So when the idea was mentioned to go to Shade for dinner on Friday by Kevin I jumped at the chance.

Shade is nestled between some eclectic shops on W. 19th Street in the heights, which is kind of odd for an upscale restaurant but yet it somehow works. Kevin, Jess and I split a bottle of red wine and Tracy had a glass of white (I can't remember either wine). The red wine was fantastic and the very knowledgeble wine stuard at Shade recommended we let it breathe to bring out the flavor. He used a Venturi Pourer which really opened up the wine. Anyway, for Dinner Tracy and I split the penne pasta with grillled chicken, Jess had the roasted duck and Kevin had the grilled beef tenderloin. Of course the whole table shared and everything was great.

Shade is definetly a place I would recommend and I will defintely be visiting again.

Heights 5k Fun Run

Last weekend Jess and I participated in the Heights 5k Fun Run. Don't let me fool you, I am by no means a 'runner'. This was my first 5k and my time was an unimpressive 27:08 minutes. Jess and I are planning on attending a few more 5k's in the Houston area, so I hope I will see my time improve.

Here are the pictures taken at the event:

In other exercise news...The Houston area pools have opened for the summer, which means I get to be humbled by Jess while we swim laps. For those of you who don't know, Jess swam extensively growing up and through college (she even has a college national championship ring) and she taught me how to swim laps last summer. I really enjoy swimming, especially now since I don't drown by the time I get to the end of the pool. Anyway, Jess swims about twice as fast a I do, which completely blows me away. It is amazing how refined and natural she moves through the water, where I just beat the water out of my way and hopefully end up going forward. I still have a lot to learn about swimming (Flip turns are on my list this year), but with Jess as my coach I have no doubt that I will see improvement.
